2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

If someone were to ask you, why do you believe the Bible, how would you answer?

This is a legitimate question that deserves a legitimate answer

  1. I was raised that way
  2. I tried it and it worked for me
  3. This is the church I grew up in, and this is what we believe

Foundation for the Christian Walk

In Sunday School, we have been studying the Church of God from a scriptural perspective.

The Declaration of Faith

    1. 14 points that define the Church of God as a Pentecostal Movement
    2. The Church of God believes the whole Bible to be completely and equally inspired and that it is the written Word of God.
      • The very first point of our Declaration of Faith states
        • We believe in the verbal inspiration of the Bible.

The Doctoral Commitments

    1. 22 statements that define our doctrine and believe system

The Practical Commitments

    1. 7 statements that explain how we “demonstrate our commitment to Christ through our practice of the spiritual disciplines”

The Bible is the foundation for the Christian life

    1. Not feelings
    2. Not emotions
    3. Not personal revelation
    4. The Word of God has to be the guiding force

In today’s world

We have postmodernism

Denies absolute truth

Everything is relevant to the individual’s beliefs and desires

No sure foundation, I tried, and it worked for me

2 Timothy 2:19 ESV – 19 But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

  1. We have anti-intellectualism
    1. Denies the need to true study of theology and God’s Word
    2. Leaves everything up to the emotions

Psalm 119:11 ESV – I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

We have experientialism

I have heard it said, “A man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an argument”

If I experience something, then it must be legit

Experience is fallible, tainted by emotion, circumstance and state of mind

According to medical reports, about 75 to 85% of experiences are tainted and unreliable.

WE NEED A FIRM FOUNDATION IN THE WORD

The Word came directly from God

John 1:1 ESV – 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 ESV – 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

God’s Word NEVER changes

James 1:17 ESV – 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Hebrews 13:8-9 ESV – 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.

God’s Word is infallible

2 Peter 1:20-21 ESV – 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.God’s Word is a sure foundation

God’s Word gives us principles to live everyday

Hebrews 4:12 ESV – For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart

God’s Word is perfect for answering sinners

Romans 3:19 ESV – Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

God’s Word is bread of life for the believer

John 6:35 ESV – Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

God’s Word directs our steps

Psalm 119:105 ESV – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Voddie Baucham, Jr.

When asked why you choose to believe the Bible

“because it is a reliable collection of historical, written down by eyewitnesses, during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses.  They report to us supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophesies and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin”
